Ready for Challenge #841? The Longest Piano Piece in History
2025.11.14 (Fri) - 2026.1.4 (Sun) 11:00-18:00 (Closed Mondays)
West Bund Museum is teaming up with France's Centre Pompidou for a special public program called "Challenge #841" Music Relay, honoring the 100th anniversary of pioneering composer Erik Satie's passing. This event is part of the "Fluxus, by Chance" exhibition and brings the Fluxus spirit to life through public participation, extending the museum's five-year collaboration with Centre Pompidou.
Satie's piece "Vexations" has only 180 notes but must be repeated 840 times—avant-garde yet minimalist. In 1963, John Cage completed this challenge through relay performance, and now this performance art continues at West Bund Museum.
The public can take turns playing the piece on the riverside platform outside the museum. Each performance is a recreation of art itself. Every participant will receive a special "Performance Certificate" that grants free admission to the "Fluxus, by Chance" exhibition—a unique keepsake of your artistic contribution.
